What kind of game is kindling - a game?

kindling - a game is a quaint little 2D retro platformer RPG that came into being from the @griffpatch july 2024 game jam, "feed it." Developed alongside my sister @rainsoupshark, the game shares some narrative quests, some exploration, and a pinch of quirky fun. It is an interesting kind of metroidvania-esque gameplay with a stronger emphasis on story that takes place in an artistically rendered world where each element is carefully considered. Skipping dialogues is as easy as hitting the space bar, and walking through that scenic world is just as easy with arrow keys or A/D. What a perfect blend of fun vitally needed for "kindling - a game!"

How to Play

Use space to continue or skip through dialogue.
Use arrow keys or A/D to move left and right.
No jumping; if you're stuck, just go back to camp, and you can continue your journey from there.
Carry only one piece of kindling at a time!

Tips & Tricks

Because jumping is disallowed, treat your approach to obstacles with much forethought.
Progressing through dialogue will propel the story forward, so do not fast-track through it.

History

"kindling - a game" was born from the creative chaos of the @griffpatch july 2024 game jam, where the theme "feed it" inspired a narrative-driven adventure. It’s the first platformer I’ve created with actual art, and I’m incredibly proud of the journey it took to get here. From designing levels to brainstorming new game design ideas, every aspect of this project was a blast. The credits, written by hand in just an hour, are a testament to the passion poured into this game. Huge shoutouts to tv girl and gorillaz for keeping me motivated throughout the development process.
