What Is The Search?

"The Search" is a wonderful Scratch ARG (Alternate Reality Game) that plunges players into a big mysterious and colorful multiverse. The story centers around Al, who was such a talented creator who found himself in a conflict with H3X-, a spirit entity trying to change Scratch by promoting "basic" content into more generic clones. Al is on a quest to find allies to help him avenge his lost clone, Meal, who had resisted H3X- and joined him. It is a beautiful combination of storytelling, puzzles, and exploration in alternate dimensions while maintaining the Scratch identity full of humor and creativity.

How to Play

Playing "The Search" requires active engagement with the Scratch platform: following clues and solving puzzles scattered throughout the experience. The clues can emerge in projects, comments, and sometimes even in the descriptions of other users' creations. You want to put the pieces of the story together and figure out what Al, Meal, and H3X- want in order to help Al find a team to take down H3X-. The Search was eventually designed by the talented Scratch user @giolaboman, who works in the Scratch ARG community. The game was described as being an effort to bring life and excitement back into the platform by encouraging creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. The themes of originality versus conformism behind the story of Al and H3X- were meant to appeal to the Scratch community. Since its launching date, "The Search" has been considered one of the main ARGs, leaving room for many other creators who took inspiration and started inventing their alternate reality games.
